Teenage 800m runner swaps track spikes for cross-country shoes as she wins the junior women’s race in Bedfordshire on Saturday
CHILTERN LEAGUE, Match 1, Keysoe, Bedfordshire, October 12
The five match league season got underway with Bedford & County playing hosts at the Equestrian Centre and they got off to a good start as their Edward Blythman and Harry Brodie came out on top of the senior men’s race.
It was a close-run thing between the pair who were a minute clear of the rest of the field en route to Bedford coming out on top over all age groups.
In the young athletes’ races, the Hemel Hempstead-based Dacorum club made amends for their disqualification from the English Road relay by placing four runners in the top six of the under-15-race, as they were led home by their Teddy Murphy.
Last winter in the league Phoebe Gill, then the England and Commonwealth Youth Games 800m gold medallist, dominated in the combined under-20 and under-17 races.
This year and, following her elevation to an Olympic Games 800m slot, the St Albans teenager was again in dominant form to take the junior women’s race by well over a minute.
In the senior women’s event, St Albans junior Sophie Jacobs, the Inter-Counties silver medallist, got the better of top Kate Rennie, a British & Irish Masters champion last November.
The Dacorum runner tops the British 10km over-50 rankings for 2024.

KENT CROSS-COUNTRY LEAGUE, Match 1, Foots Cray, October 12
Tonbridge dominated the men’s race with the first three men home and took both team awards, led by Ted Higgins, who won his first league match since 2019.
The young athletes’ races were well supported and Joseph Scanes followed up his fifth fastest lap in the under-17 national road relays a week earlier, with victory as his Blackheath club cleared up in the team stakes.
It was Blackheath who dominated the women’s race as Chloe Sharp won by nearly a minute to repeat her victory from the February league outing earlier this year.

HAMPSHIRE LEAGUE, Match 1, Basingstoke, October 12
The season began with Basingstoke & Mid Hants AC playing hosts at Popham Airfield and the league still trying to arrange a venue for the fifth match in February.
Maddie Deadman won the women’s race from Aldershot’s Megan Gadsby but could not stop their rivals taking the team honours.
The younger women’s races saw Kitty Scott again lead her Aldershot under-15 team to success just a week after they won the English Road relay championships at Sutton Park.
The senior men’s event saw a recent refugee Abdinasir Mohamoud Elmi win by over a minute for Bournemouth of whom the club said: “He’d made the treacherous journey to the UK from Somalia and had a background of training with some of the world’s top athletes in Mo Farah and Bashir Abdi.”
His club website adds: “When he first started attending training sessions it was clear that Abdinasir was a cut above any of the other athletes at the club.”
World Athletics lists him as from Bahrain with a half marathon best of 64:09 from 2021.

START FITNESS MET LEAGUE, Match 1, Claybury Country Park, London, October 12
Brett Rushman, the Hertfordshire cross-country champion, who last won a Metropolitan League race as an under-18 runner in 2018, led at the start, down the pathway into the woods with Luca Minale and a huge phalanx of runners just behind them, Alastair Aitken reports.
It was on the second lap of three that Rushman went clear down a hill and, running well behind him, it was the first under-20 runner Abdirahim Hamud and Woodford’s local man Joel Doyle.
Rushman, who has run 1500m in 3:51.68 and 5000m in 14:05.07, said: “I hope to do 1500m and 5000m in the summer. I usually run most of the BMC races.”
Out of the 393 finishers the two oldest were 362nd placer Richard Bloom, who is aged 79, and Stuart Mann, who is aged M80 and came 386th.
Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets topped both the men’s and women’s leagues.
In the women’s race Khaihisa Mhlanga was in a group of three until the final lap when she drew well clear.
Luke Dunham, an under-17 runner who was third in the English Schools 3000m, had some clear victories in the Met League last season and carried on winning at Claybury.
Following Dunham home, in second place was a new name with potential called Arjuna Pflug for Highgate Harriers.
Barnet’s Jorjia March had another easy Met League win and has had many good runs including coming second in the International Cross Country at Parliament Hill and third in the Southern. She had a comfortable win at Claybury looks like coming back to form.

SUSSEX LEAGUE, Match 1, Goodwood, West Sussex, October 12
For the second time in two weeks, the downs adjacent to the famous Glorious Goodwood racecourse were used as the league followed on from the Sussex relays two weeks earlier.
The winner of the final match last winter was Robbie Fitzgibbon and tributes were paid to him following his untimely death a few days earlier.
Here, it was Brighton & Hove who again took most of the top places and the men’s event was taken by their Andrew Green.
Eastbourne Rovers also had a good match and their Raya Petrova, who was ninth in the delayed English National U17 race came out on top of the all-women event.
The under-15 silver medallist there, Isabella Buchanan won yet another Sussex race here.

TRACKSMITH SURREY LEAGUE Div 1, Match 1A, Wimbledon Common, October 12
The top flight divisions in both the men’s and women’s sections were joined by young athletes from all clubs competing in the league from all divisions, despite those lower clubs’ seniors competing in the B match elsewhere.
Hercules Wimbledon, champions last winter, despite being headed by Belgrave in the final match back then, again ran out solid team winners, even though their Dan Cliffe was headed by their rival’s Andrew Fyfe.
There was a close race among the senior women as Dorking & Mole Valley’s Alice Crane headed Guildford’s Suzie Monk, the winner of the final match last winter and 2023/24 champion.
In the young athletes’ events, Sutton & District’s Ethan Newell, the England indoor 800m silver medallist and member of their silver winning relay team in the England relays a week earlier had a narrow under-17 race victory over Ollie Jermy.
The under-17 women’s race, it was under-15 Isabella Harrison the London Schools 1500-metre champion who took the honours;
