Welshman Griffiths wins his local race on 12th attempt as Hauger-Thackery takes women’s victory in our latest UK-wide results round-up
Dewi Griffiths, who has had several goes at it, finally won his home town 10km event on Sunday (Sept 15) and did so in 28:21 to finally get the better of the Birchfield pair of Kadar Omar and Omar Ahmed with who he has battled all year.
The time was just a second outside the Swansea Harrier’s personal best set in Manchester in May.
What’s more, Griffiths’ time in the Admiral-sponsored race was faster than any of the four winning times set on this course by his fellow Swansea Harrier and former British marathon record-holder Steve Jones.
Women’s race winner Calli Hauger-Thackery, the European half-marathon third placer, finished in 10th overall in 31:57 for a winning margin over Lauren Cooper of more than three minutes.
Hauger-Thackery’s time was outside her second ranked 31:02 for the year in only her second outing since her Olympic marathon non finish.
All summer Swansea’s Alan Davies has been churning out M70 records on the track but here turned his attention to the roads and obliterated Steve Charlton’s near 28-year-old M70 10km best by 48 seconds with 37:07. The time was also claimed as a world age group best as the best listed to date is that of Belgium’s Eddy Vierendeels at 37:12.

ROUND NORFOLK RELAY, September 15/16, Kings Lynn
The 36th edition of the circuit of the Norfolk boundary race attracted a maximum entry of 60 teams, despite the rival attraction of the English National cross-country championships, who usurped their date.
There were a couple of changes to the route this year on stages 10 and 11 which affected the age graded time calculations.
The race started in waves, with the slowest first, before City of Norwich, who went in the final batch of teams sent off, came out on top to win by over half-an-hour in the race that runs through the night on road and off-road stages.
The event started with a stage record 93:33 for the opening 16.32 miles and it went to Luke Alden of Norwich Road Runners, then on stage three, Ellie Grubb beat her own record for the 5.76 miles with 37:45.
The best age graded runner was St Edmunds Pacers’ 65-year-old Jenny Morgan whose 57:07 for stage 8’s 7.52 miles was estimated at 94.3 per cent on the tables.
